Target (NYSE: TGT) has announced a recall on toddler boots that have a unicorn design due to a choking hazard. The recall includes various sizes of the boots that range from 5-13 in children as well as size 1 The Consumer Product Safety Commission has noted that the horn that is on the boots can detach, which would then pose a choking risk to children of all ages. The official name of the unicorn boots in question is ‘Cat & Jack Chiara’ and the model number(s) that are included in the recall are TARGET0930156XX. The “XX” at the end of the model is the size of the boots. Consumers who have purchased the unicorn boots should return to their local target store for a full refund. The unicorn boots were sold through various channels including in store, online and through Google Express from October 2018 – November 2018.

On June 5, 2019, beauty giant Sephora is going to close more than 400 stores in the morning for company wide inclusion workshops for its employees, according to a statement posted to the company’s website. The closure of 400+ stores will include some 16,000 employees and the training courses and inclusion workshops are designed to help educate and train employees about Sephora’s brand values. The closures are not just for retail stores with the company-wide training also including Sephora’s distribution centers and corporate offices. Sephora said in a statement that it “believes in championing all beauty,” and “building a community where diversity is expected.” The values-training comes at a time where consumers are hyper-sensitive to discrimination that happens while shopping, dining out, and even using ride-sharing apps.

Costco’s (NASDAQ: COST) CFO Richard Galanti is surely happy about the latest news coming from one of its stores. Costco had to do a double take after seeing a single purchase that was recorded at nearly $400,000 (yes, that’s 5 zeros). What was the purchase? A single diamond ring. The sale of such a high priced item was significant for the chain. Costco has nearly 500 diamond rings for sale on its website, with the highest being priced at $419,000. While most people aren’t spending that kind of money on an engagement ring, the recipient of such a ring will surely be delighted. As a result of this expensive purchase as well as other big-ticket items “like golf simulators that sold for $14,000 each” Galanti explains, Costco saw a nice bump in quarterly earnings.

Dollar Tree executives after much deliberation have decided to sell items in the store priced higher than the standard $1 price point. For awhile, Dollar Tree was the only “dollar store” selling items for just $1, where other retailers like Dollar General and Family Dollar have many items priced above $1. After testing prices earlier this year, the company has decided to expand the rollout from one store to a second test phase including 100 stores. The new initiative is known as Dollar Tree Plus, where the ‘everything’s a dollar model’ remains, but additional items will be added to the store at prices higher than $1. Many of the items will be priced at an average of $1.25 with plans to reach a $2.25 average in five years. While some shoppers may pick up one less item as they go for more expensive merchandise, the company seems to think they will see operating profits jump.

Amazon, the giant online retailer which was founded in 1994 and famous for its Prime Membership which includes 2 day and 1 day shipping in some cases, is bound to sometimes ship the wrong item given the nearly 1.6 million packages it ships each day. This time around, however, one man received something not even close to what he ordered. An Alabama customer who had ordered some household items from Amazon which included a shower curtain and shower rings, received instead a urine sample of a private citizen. 
In a statement the man gave to KFOR, “I got an email Thursday morning saying the package had been delivered. I opened it. And when I Reached in and pulled it out [it was] some kind of urine specimen or something like that. I was very surprised. My son was standing there watching me open it and he got a good laugh out of it.” The man contacted Amazon, who said “they were really sorry.” Amazon did not want the sample back but will be sending the man the items he actually ordered.
